Bonus Episode: Interview with Hockey Prospectus’s Ryan Wagman

Brian briefly reviews a copy of Hockey Prospectus 2014-15 (spoiler: very favourable), and talks with contributing writer Ryan Wagman about how he makes his fantasy hockey decisions.

We chat about fantasy hockey management styles, useful advanced stats (and a couple new ones, too), sophomore slumps, and the way that analytics may or may not change hockey's actual on-ice product.

Players discussed include Ales Hemsky, Tukka Rask, Nazem Kadri, Trevor Daley, Nick Bjugstad, Matt Moulson, Tomas Plekanec, Tomas Hertl, Matthew Nieto, Joe Thornton, and more.

Full disclosure: Hockey Prospectus provided us with a free copy of the guide for review.

No. 36 - (Don’t) Believe the Hype

On this week's episode, Elan and Brian cut through the hype on several overachievers, and get as close as they ever do to buying into the hype that surrounds one newly-minted NHLer.

Starting off with a look at this weeks injuries and outjuries, we focus in on one particular lineup returnee climbing his team's depth chart faster than expected at the cost of one of his teammates, and draw attention to a defenceman who could get a chance to suddenly step into a new and important role. We also address the sadly difficult question of which team's players you need to avoid the most.

Listen on to find out which player was the most frequent topic in our Twitter mentions this week, which player isn't taking advantage of a plum line assignment, which goalie is redeeming himself early on, and which players have landed themselves on our first Keeping Karlsson-patented Snoozers list of 2014-15.

Players covered on this episode include Johnny Boychuk, Bobby Ryan, Linden Vey, Pekka Rinne, Semyon Varlamov, Lubomir Visnovsky, Zdeno Chara, Cory Conacher, Dustin Brown, Bobby Ryan, Tomas Hertl, Anders Lee, Matthew Nieto, Jonathan Drouin, Tyler Toffoli, Dougie Hamilton, Nikolai Kulemin, and more..

Bonus Episode: Interview with Brock Seguin

Elan sits down with Brock Seguin, Editor-In-Chief at DailyFaceoff.com to talk about everything he’s doing at that great site. They discuss how Brock keeps the starting goalies and line combos updated, how he put together the DFO draft kit, and some other lesser known features of the site. Elan also asks about some of the more bold projections Brock made in the DailyFaceoff draft-kit, who he targeted in his hockey pools, and who he thinks are some current buy-low and sell-high candidates.

Enjoy the bonus content! We’ll be back with our next regular episode next Sunday as usual.

No. 35 - Whoa There

Don't make that add, drop, or trade just yet -- on this episode, Elan and Brian take a look at why some guys are way up, why others are way down, and why you shouldn't get caught with your head spinning all around.

This week's edition of Keeping Karlsson kicks off with a prescription for deep breaths, especially regarding two goalies who have been particularly testing their owners after slow starts. In the headlines, we also cover injuries to a couple key contributors, the Leafs' blueline situation, and a new face in the Avalanche net.

We then take a look at some underlying numbers that are just a little bit wackier than they should be at this point of the year, naming early candidates for you to consider selling high or buying low. Elan and Brian also share their views on how patient you need to be with the team you picked on draft day.

The show closes with the return of the Lightning Round, where the guys give the lowdown on the names that appeared the most in our Twitter mentions this week.

Players covered this week include Victor Hedman, Jason Garrison, Brock Nelson, Tukka Rask, Damon Severson, Troy Brouwer, Gabriel Landeskog, Rick Nash, Calvin Pickard, Patric Hornqvist, Tanner Pearson, and more.

Elan and Brian also give their takes on listener questions involving devilish veterans and strategic goaltending decisions, and run down their inaugural sets of notable players

Players covered include Pascal Dupuis, Brock Nelson, Johnny Boychuk, Darcy Kuemper, Semyon Varlamov, Eric Gelinas, Brad Richards, Sami Vatanen, Anton Khudobin, Patrick Maroon... and many more.

No. 33 - Sitting, Waiting, Watchlisting

It's three days before the regular season, NHL teams are making their final cuts, and you've got your fantasy lineup set for opening night. What can you do between now and then?

On this (finally) final pre-season episode of Keeping Karlsson, Elan and Brian have a couple suggestions for how to make the most of your fantasy team's post-draft period.

We discuss the players most affected by yesterday's Isles trades, the likelihood of one particular preseason performer making a regular season impression, and a potential tweak to our show's name.

Elan and Brian also take a look at players who went widely undrafted across fantasy leagues, and zoom in on a handful of potential diamonds in the free agency rough that you'll want to have on your watchlist as the season begins.
